Elephant Bells

When I was growing up, my Grandmother had a set of Indian Elephant bells hanging in her kitchen as a chime.  As kids, we loved to run the circle from the living room, to the dining room, and thru the kitchen.  Each time ringing those bells as we passed.

The sound of wind chimes often take me back to those days of my childhood.  I can almost hear the laughter of my siblings, feel the Love of my Grandmother as she cooked, and smell the aroma of the meal.  What a wonderful way to relax on a weekend, or unwind after a busy day.

Woke up on a vacation…

Last night I had my bedroom window open. There was a gentle breeze blowing that soothed me to sleep, as did the gentle song my wind chime was singing. As an added bonus, it woke me with a new song this morning.

Even though it was my own bedroom at home, the gentle breeze and the wind song of my chime gave me the sensation of waking up while on vacation. It was only the alarm clock that I had forgotten to turn off that broke the illusion of being on vacation.

Get the Cat!!!

Tonight, I’m feeling rather frustrated.  It is very hot and humid.  There is no wind to speak of.  The AC won’t kick on since it is not quite warm enough outside to trip the thermostat.  Yet the humidity still seems to find its way in.

Thankfully, we have an indoor chime with which the cat likes to play.  Not quite the soothing natural sounds that the wind make, but just enough to take my mind off of the worries of the day.  Whimsical chimes for a Whimsical cat.

Too Tired to Stay up?

I’ve got to admit, I’ve been putting off the posting for today.  Just sitting here next to the window, every now and then I can feel a slight breeze gently push thru the screen of my window.  A second later, I here the soft tang of the wooden clapper of my windchime.  I can barely hold my eyes open.  Goodnight everyone.

Sweet Dreams

We lived near marsh lands and there were always frogs singing as soon as warm weather arrived.  There were always these really high pitched peeps ringing through the night and we always wondered what frogs were making those sounds.

I decided to get a flashlight and go and find out once and for all.  I closed in on the sound and crept quietly up to where the sound was coming from.  I caught a tiny little frog only about one inch big.  Hard to believe something so small was making such a big noise.

When I moved away years later I found it was very hard to get to sleep at night.  I found that hanging a metal wind chime in my room near the fan made sounds much like the singing of the frogs.   Now I sleep like a baby!

Remembering

On this day, we all will, at some point, stop and remember that day.  Were we were, what we were doing, who we were with, perhaps even a little bit of how we felt.  Hopefully, you will also stop and think about where we are going from here, as a country.  Pride in country is still important and to be celebrated.  It is celebrated with all sorts of home decor.  Flags, wind chimes, spinners, even the daring home fireworks (please be careful).  On this day may we all remember that this is still a great country, that we are a great nation, and a great people, and we still have much to be proud about.  On this and every 9/11, celebrate this at home, at church, at work, and in your heart.  A great song writer once said, ” This Lady may have stumbled, but she ain’t never fell”.  Today, proudly show your patriotism.

Dream Catchers

When we were kids my brother kept having nightmares.  Just the usually kid stuff but it got to be really annoying with him waking everyone up once or twice every night.

My grandmother brought a dream catcher and put it up over his bed.  It had some beads in the webbing and she said the beads were spiders that caught bad dreams in the web.  She told him he would not have to worry about bad dreams anymore because the dream catcher was there to make sure only good dreams would get through to where he would be sleeping.

It worked!  He had only good dreams from then on.

It was only a problem when we went on vacation or when we stayed at a friends’ house for a night.  We had to make sure that dream catcher was with him everywhere he slept.

Capiz Shell Wind Chimes

My grandmother went to California on a vacation when we were very young, way back in the ‘50’s.  She brought souvenirs for all of us when she returned.

She brought us Coconuts decorated with shells so that they had a face and sea shell wind chimes that were called Capiz Shell Wind Chimes because they were made from Capiz shells.  They were really pretty and made a very sweet sound when they chimed.  I never had a chance to visit California and I never saw chimes like those again until recently.

Wind Chimes helped save my life

Recently, I started having problems with my blood pressure.  I needed to be able to relax and get rid of the stress and anxiety of every day life.  My doctor recommended many things, but I was surprised when he recommended a wind chime.

Now, when I come home, I sit on my porch with a cool drink, feel the cool breeze, close my eyes and listen to my new wind chime.  My wife now buys me a new wind chime for our porch hook for Father’s Day, my birth day, even Christmas.

The best part is that my blood pressure has come down, and I really look forward to my time alone with my chime.  It really helps me get through the day.

The family Screech…

When I was a kid we moved to a large old house in a small historic town.  My parents bought it from an elderly lady who had lived there for over 80 years.  The house was big and old and was surrounded by many trees.  She had several wind chimes hanging in those trees.

There was a large swamp nearby and you could always tell when winter was really over because the frogs started singing when spring had truly arrived.

One night we were standing out front and happened to see something dark over one of the windows.  We got a flash light and shined it on the shadow and discovered it was a Screech Owl.  Turned out there was a whole family of seven owls living in the tree right next to the front porch.

They only lived there for the first year we lived in the house.  I guess they didn’t appreciate having four noisy kids as neighbors.
